While I think it’s all right to exchange a gift, it’s really important to thank givers, and show a lot of respect for the effort they put in. If you’re dealing with other thrifty people who want to feel generous, this allows them them to have fun giving gifts.

Last year, I spent two days canning xmas presents. I received a few amazing hand made gifts. I also received several great pieces from a wizard of dollar and thrift store shopping. (she takes a lot of time to learn her family’s tastes, so she gets more gift out of $2 than most people do out of $20.) Some of my relatives shopped at malls. Some got crazy deals, and looked like they’d spent a lot more than they did. It was fun for all of us. A few tried to be fair, hit the mall, and spend the exact same amount on each family member.

All of this money saving, tasty and pretty christmas magic depends on our willingness to appreciate the gifts as they’re given, and our willingness to talk to each other about our tastes. If any of us return or exchange gifts, that’s fine, but we do it quietly,
